About BANASURA SAGAR DAM

Banasura Sagar Dam is one of Wayanad's most iconic tourist attractions, located at Padinjarathara, about 21 km from Kalpetta. Built across the Karamanathodu River, a tributary of the Kabini River, the dam is renowned as the largest earth dam in India and one of the largest of its kind in Asia. Surrounded by the majestic Banasura Hills, lush forests, and picturesque islands, the dam offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, adventure, and engineering excellence.

Overview

The Banasura Sagar Dam is part of the Kuttiyadi Augmentation Project, which was designed to support hydroelectric power generation, irrigation, and drinking water supply in northern Kerala. Construction began in 1979, and the project was completed in 2004. The massive earthen dam, built using stones and compacted earth instead of concrete, is a remarkable engineering achievement.

The dam derives its name from Banasura, the legendary son of King Mahabali in Hindu mythology. According to local belief, Banasura performed penance in the nearby hills, which are now known as the Banasura Hills.
