About PAZHASSI MUSEUM

The Pazhassi Museum, located at Mananthavady in Wayanad, is a historic museum dedicated to Veera Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja (1753–1805), one of Kerala's greatest freedom fighters. Situated beside the Pazhassi Raja Tomb on the banks of the Kabini River, the museum preserves the life, struggle, and achievements of the legendary ruler, who is widely known as the "Lion of Kerala." It is maintained by the Kerala State Department of Archaeology and is one of Wayanad's most important heritage attractions.

History

After Pazhassi Raja was killed in a battle near Mavilamthodu, Pulpally, in 1805, his body was brought to Mananthavady and cremated with military honours. A memorial was later built at the cremation site. In 1996, an underground museum was established next to the tomb to preserve his legacy and showcase the cultural history of Kerala.
