About WAYANAD WILD LIFE SANCTUARY

Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most popular wildlife destinations in Kerala, located about 16 km from Sulthan Bathery in Wayanad. It forms the southern part of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, which is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The sanctuary shares its borders with Bandipur National Park (Karnataka), Nagarhole National Park (Karnataka), and Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (Tamil Nadu), creating one of the largest protected forest ecosystems in South India. It is especially famous for its elephant population, jeep safaris, and rich biodiversity.

Overview

Established in 1973, the sanctuary covers approximately 345 square kilometres of tropical moist deciduous, semi-evergreen, and dry deciduous forests. In 1991–92, it was brought under Project Elephant, making it an important conservation area for Asian elephants. The sanctuary is home to a wide variety of wildlife and offers visitors a chance to experience nature in its purest form.

Jeep Safari

The jeep safari is the main attraction at Muthanga. Guided by experienced forest staff, visitors travel through dense forests in search of wildlife. Early morning and late afternoon safaris provide the best opportunities to spot animals in their natural habitat.
