Chain Tree – The Chain Tree that tells the history and legend of Wayanad
The Chain Tree, located on the side of the Thamarassery Churam road near Lakkidi, is a historical monument that makes the journey to Wayanad more interesting. This huge tree, bound with an iron chain, has been attracting tourists and history seekers alike for years. Apart from its natural beauty, what has made this tree famous is the popular legend surrounding it.
Karinthandan and Thamarassery Churam
According to popular belief, Karinthandan was a tribal leader belonging to the Paniya tribe of Wayanad. He had an extraordinary knowledge of forest paths and mountain slopes and guided a British engineer to Wayanad via Thamarassery Churam during the British rule. Legend has it that Karinthandan was later tricked into killing him to take all the credit for discovering the route. This story has been passed down orally for generations.
Why is there a chain on the tree?
After Karinthandan's death, the locals believed that his spirit was disturbing the passers-by. Local legend has it that the spirit was then tied to this tree with an iron chain through a spiritual ceremony. It was after this that the tree came to be known as the "Chain Tree" or "Chain Tree". Some people still believe that the chain and the tree grow together.
History and Legend
The story of Karinthandan and the Chain Tree is one of the most famous folk traditions in Wayanad. However, there are no contemporary official historical records that fully confirm these events. Therefore, researchers consider this story to be part of Wayanad's cultural heritage and the collective memory of the tribal community, rather than presenting it as historical truth.
The Chain Tree Today
Today, the Chain Tree is one of the major tourist attractions in Wayanad. Travelers to Lakkidi View Point and Thamarassery Pass stop here to learn about this legend and take pictures. There is also a small shrine nearby in memory of Karinthandan. Many drivers can still be seen praying here for a safe journey.
A symbol of Wayanad's heritage
The Chain Tree is not just a tree. It is a cultural symbol that reminds us of Wayanad's history, popular beliefs, and the contributions of the tribal community. Whether the story of Karinthandan is true history or a popular legend—it remains a precious legacy that is attached to Wayanad's identity and heritage.
